Doesn’t everyone love a true underdog story? Well, here’s one that will put the tale of the Bad News Bears to shame. When Jessica Moltisanti created Zone Cheer All-Stars on June 1, 2009, she was just hoping to give kids a safe and fun place to spend their free time. “I put signs out on the road and rented space at a local gymnastics facility,” says Moltisanti. “I took in every girl who was interested in cheerleading at the time.” Her inclusive attitude brought her about 20 girls, who had never cheered before; only four could tumble. But by the end of the season, Moltisanti had turned the rookies into a strong Senior Level 3 team with full-squad handspring tucks. “My motto for the year was, ‘Reach for the stars,’ ” she says. “I taught the girls to dream, have big goals and achieve them through hard work and dedication.” This motto seems to have extended to Moltisanti’s own business plans: Within a year of the gym’s opening, the program had tripled and Zone Cheer found themselves needing to expand. Almost exactly a year after it began, the program opened the doors of a new facility to three competitive squads (Youth Level 1, Junior Level 2, Senior Level 3) and nearly 30 individual private tumblers. And that squad who’d never cheered before? Over the last year they placed sixth at UCA Nationals, second at UCA Regionals and took home the Superior Team award at camp last summer. Not bad for a brand new team. “I teach every single person who walks through my door to be a confident, respectful individual, and to believe in their dreams, because the possibilities are endless.”
